The Oklahoma House of Representatives recently paused to honor two law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty: Corporal Robert William Sumner of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and Brian Keith Herbert of the Osage Nation Police Department.
According to the Oklahoma House of Representatives release, through House Resolution 1029, sponsored by Rep. Erick Harris (R-Edmond), Thursday, was officially designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day in Oklahoma. This aligns with the national observance of National Police Week, which was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to honor officers killed or injured in the line of duty.
In a statement, Rep. Harris emphasized the importance of recognizing law enforcement officers and their service. The resolution expresses continued support for officers at all levels—federal, state, local, and tribal—as they work to maintain public safety. The resolution both commemorates fallen officers and affirms the ongoing efforts of those currently serving.
