Following a decisive vote earlier this week, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill designed to tighten regulations on non-domiciled commercial drivers operating within the state. The Oklahoma Secure Roads and Safe Trucking Act of 2025, also known as Senate Bill 20, secured approval with a majority of 71-13. In line with President Trump’s aggressive posture on immigration and employment law enforcement, this legislation requires that all foreign truckers show a valid work visa, and proof of citizenship, and pass an English language proficiency test, as reported by the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The bill's key advocate, Representative Jonathan Wilk, stated on the Oklahoma House of Representatives, “This legislation puts an end to the days of foreign drivers slipping through the cracks and putting our citizens at risk,” emphasizing the commitment to prioritizing American workers. Wilk highlighted the influence of the former President’s stances by saying, “President Trump showed us the importance of securing our borders and standing up for American workers. SB 20 brings that same America First mindset to Oklahoma roads.” Non-compliant drivers now face a $3,000 fine and are prohibited from driving until they meet the set criteria.
Under the new law, drivers found without the requisite documentation will not only be fined hefty sums but also risk facing up to 90 days in jail as a repercussion for repeated offenses. Furthermore, the bill mandates that commercial drivers be able to communicate effectively in English, a measure intended to facilitate clear interaction with law enforcement, emergency responders, and fellow motorists on the road.
Adding his voice to the chorus of approval, Speaker of the House Kyle Hilbert praised the bill's passage, indicating a strong alignment with national leadership on the matter. Hilbert stated, "President Trump has led the way and made it clear: we’re done with the chaos and we’re standing up for legal, law-abiding, hardworking Americans," as per the House's statement. Notably, SB 20 also implements accountability measures for commercial carriers, and cargo owners, to guarantee across-the-board compliance.
