Amid reflections and solemn tributes, Oklahoma's political community has paused to remember one of their own, with Rep. Ty Burns, R-Pawnee, speaking out to commemorate the legacy of the late former Rep. Larry Ferguson. Having served House District 35 for two decades and as House minority floor leader, Ferguson was an influential figure in state politics, known for his steadfast leadership and commitment to his constituents.
During a remembrance ceremony at the Oklahoma State Capitol, Burns expressed his admiration for the work of Ferguson, who was succeeded by former Reps. Dennis Casey and Rex Duncan before Burns himself assumed the mantle. In a statement obtained by Oklahoma House of Representatives, Burns said, "Larry Ferguson spent two decades representing House District 35 and his leadership left a lasting mark on the Oklahoma House of Representatives." He hailed Ferguson as "a steady voice in uncertain times, a principled leader who stood firm in his values and a tireless advocate for the people he served."
"Larry led during a period of major change and he helped shape the path for future conservatives in a chamber that looked very different than it does today," Burns continued on the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He emphasized Ferguson's approach to governance, highlighting his understanding of the importance of "listening to people, building consensus when it mattered and never losing sight of who he worked for — the families back home."
The ceremony included Burns presenting the USA flag flown in Ferguson’s honor, a symbolic gesture conveying the esteem in which the late representative is held. "It’s a privilege to represent the same district Larry cared so deeply about," Burns remarked on the Oklahoma House of Representatives, indicating a sense of responsibility to uphold the values and standards set by his predecessor. The legacy Ferguson leaves behind is one "reflects a life of purpose, dedicated service and a deep love of Oklahoma," as Burns put it in his closing remarks.
