The third annual Hmong Day celebration recently unfolded at the State Capitol, as reported by the Oklahoma State Senate on their official website. This event, held last Thursday, recognized and honored the Hmong community and notably the Vietnam War veterans who fought alongside U.S. forces. Senator Shane Jett, R-Shawnee, took to the Senate floor to deliver a heartfelt acknowledgment of the Hmong delegation's enduring legacy of service and sacrifice, stating "It was an honor to welcome the Hmong community to the Senate floor and recognize the incredible legacy of service and sacrifice they represent," and lauded their contribution to both historical military efforts and their present-day role in enriching the cultural tapestry of Oklahoma,as stated by the Oklahoma State Senate.
Senator Julie McIntosh, R-Porter, also participated in the celebrations and spoke about the new Hmong heritage center proposed in her district, which hosts the annual Oklahoma Hmong New Year festival, she expressed her excitement for the project citing it will foster remembrance and education, and during the event she highlighted the meaningful connections she's formed with the Hmong families, according to the Oklahoma State Senate publication.
Hmong Day was more than just an assembly of politicians and speeches; it was a vibrant exposition of Hmong heritage, showcasing traditional performances, attire, and cuisine that offered a glimpse into the culture of this significant community. These cultural exhibitions were a part of the overall experience designed to celebrate and educate visitors on the rich traditions that the Hmong community proudly carries forth, as per the Oklahoma State Senate.
