The Oklahoma Legislative Latino Caucus will host the ninth annual Hispanic Cultural Day at the state Capitol today. The event is designed to recognize the economic and cultural contributions of the Hispanic community. Nationally, the Latino GDP is estimated at $3.6 trillion, which would rank as the fifth-largest economy globally. In Oklahoma, the Hispanic community contributes approximately $8 billion in state revenue, according to Senator Michael Brooks, chair of the Latino Caucus.
According to the Oklahoma Senate release, held on the second floor of the Capitol, the event will include art, food, music, dance, and advocacy efforts. Representative Annie Menz of Norman said the event provides an opportunity to highlight Hispanic heritage and encourage community engagement.
The day will begin at 9 a.m. with opening remarks and a keynote speech by Claudia San Pedro, former president of Sonic Drive-In. Exhibit tables featuring local Hispanic restaurants and nonprofits will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Performances are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. in the second floor rotunda.
Representative Arturo Alonso-Sandoval noted that Hispanic residents are the fastest-growing demographic in Oklahoma and continue to contribute to various sectors across the state.
