An Orange County man has been sentenced to a hard 50 years for a road rage incident that turned deadly last year. As reported by ClickOrlando, Nicholas Carrasquillo, 27, was handed down the sentence yesterday for the second-degree murder of 30-year-old David Alexzander Sligh, following a confrontation on East Colonial Drive. The sentences, inclusive of a concurrent 15-year term for shooting at an occupied vehicle, will be served at the same time, equating to 50 years in total.
According to the Ninth Judicial Circuit, on January 22, 2024, the victim, David Sligh, was on his way to a new job when the tragic event unfolded. A statement detailed by WFTV recounts Carrasquillo's admission of firing at Sligh after they exchanged words at a stoplight, escalating to the point where Carrasquillo retrieved his gun from his glovebox and began shooting, initially at the ground before aiming at Sligh. In a disturbing admission, the defendant told authorities he had intended only to "maim" the victim. Police reports confirm that no weapon was found on Sligh.
The emotional weight of the loss was palpable in court as family members shared poignant victim impact statements. David's widow, Shannon Sligh expressed her view that the sentence seemed insufficient. "I would rather him serve life, a life for a life," she said in a report by WESH. She grieves not only for her husband but also for their son, who is now growing up without a father. Her family's tragedy was made vividly clear as she clutched a photo of her husband and their 2-year-old son while delivering her statement in court.
Defense arguments painted a picture of a scenario forced into action by fear and a veteran's troubled past. Carrasquillo's attorney, according to WESH, cited his traumatic brain injury and PTSD from U.S. Army service in a bid to secure a more lenient mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years. Ten character reference letters were presented in his defense, but the prosecutor pushed for a no less than 35-year sentence.
