May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the well-being of individuals, particularly those in high-stress professions. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office has taken to social media to emphasize the value of Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD) for first responders in the area. As reported on their Facebook page, these debriefings are essential in providing a support system for those repeatedly facing potentially traumatic events on the job.

Statistics reveal that while an average person might encounter a critical incident about 1.5 to 2.0 times in their life, public safety professionals can expect to face well over 100 such incidents during their careers. To deliberately look away from this stark reality would be to ignore the compounded psychological toll these experiences impart on our first responders. CISD sessions aim to mitigate this burden by offering a safe place for sharing and processing these traumatic encounters. These debriefings are not only crucial for the individuals directly involved but also for maintaining the integrity and health of the services they provide to the community.

Notably, the impact of CISDs on those who partake is significant. According to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, "individuals who share their experiences often enjoy better eating habits, improved sleep, enhanced health, longer tenures in their jobs, and fewer disruptions in their personal lives." This positive outcome bolsters both the personal well-being of the first responders and their professional capacity to continue serving effectively.

Recognizing the critical nature of this support, the Ozaukee County CID team extends its services across various disciplines within emergency response, from law enforcement to social workers and clergy. Established in 2017, this multidisciplinary team has dedicated itself to upholding the mental health resilience of Ozaukee County's first responders. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office expressed their gratitude, stating, "Our CID team takes care of our first responders and we're very appreciative of our team."
