
A man named Paul Lawrence Rader was involved in a prolonged standoff with sheriff's deputies in Chatham County that ended with him being shot and taken into custody, as reported by CBS17. The confrontation occurred as deputies were attempting to serve an involuntary commitment order on Lambert Chapel Road in Bear Creek.
As deputies were speaking with Rader's family outside the residence around 3:30 p.m., the man began discharging a weapon from inside a trailer, escalating to firing directly at law enforcement officers which sparked a shootout that saw hundreds of rounds exchanged over several hours, no bystanders or deputies were physically injured during the incident WRAL reports. Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist.
Ultimately, the standoff concluded just after midnight, "This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable situation that could have ended very differently," Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson was quoted saying in a statement obtained by Chapelboro. The sheriff expressed gratitude that no deputies or bystanders were harmed and acknowledged the professionalism of his deputies under intense pressure.
After being shot, Rader was transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he remained conscious and alert, Rader has been charged with multiple felonies including two counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of misdemeanor injury to real property, according to a release from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, adding that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in such situations.
