The future of Philadelphia's streets is one step closer to increasing safety measures with the expansion of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE). According to a May 2024 press release from the City of Philadelphia Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS), five critical corridors are now prioritized for ASE after a meticulous review of new crash and speed data collected over the past year.
Initial reports introduced a methodology for selecting corridors based on data indicative of the most hazardous conditions. However, as city officials continued to analyze new data, certain corridors emerged as the primary candidates for implementing ASE measures. The Addendum: May 2024 Automated Speed Enforcement Expansion Report memorandum puts a refined list with State Route 611 and State Route 13 at the top. These routes have consistently been identified as areas where speed enforcement can yield critical safety improvements.
Further analysis has led to substituting State Route 1004 (Erie Avenue/Torresdale Avenue) and State Route 2001 (Christopher Columbus Boulevard/Delaware Avenue/Moyamensing Avenue) instead of previous contenders, such as SR 3 and SR 291. This reshuffling underscores OTIS's commitment to adapting its strategies based on the most current and accurate data available, optimizing the impact of ASE and potentially saving lives.
