In a notable achievement for digital connectivity, Pierce County, in collaboration with Comcast, has reportedly wrapped up the Key Peninsula broadband enhancement project, surprising residents with an early completion and service availability to additional households and businesses. According to a Pierce County announcement, the initial projection aimed for late spring, but the combined efforts led to the completion ahead of time, connecting over 70 extra locations than originally targeted.
Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello emphasized the vital role of internet access in contemporary life, stating, "Broadband is more than just infrastructure – it’s a connection to opportunity," as reported by the county's official website. Mello praised the rapid execution of the project which ensures that residents can actively participate in the daily digital exchange of learning and working. The broadband expansion reflects the county's initiative to bring enhanced internet services to less serviced areas, bolstering both the livelihood of residents and the prosperity of local businesses.
The high-speed internet project, with a budget of approximately $5 million, was realized through a public-private partnership. The county pooled $3.75 million of federal money obtained via the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, complementing Comcast's financial investment. This funding shows that both groups are serious about helping rural communities get better access to the internet.
Roy Novosel, Comcast Pacific Northwest Region's Vice President of Engineering, conveyed the company's enthusiasm to join the Key Peninsula community, saying, "We are excited to officially be part of the Key Peninsula community," as per the Pierce County announcement. Novosel mentioned that the community could now access various Comcast services, such as internet, mobile, and streaming TV, heralding another connected rural area in Washington. Moreover, Comcast is extending their footprint with upcoming construction slated for Thun Field, promising to perpetuate this advance in connectivity.
Amid affordability concerns, Comcast has provisions for low-income households to tap into its Internet Essentials program. This initiative, touted as the largest of its kind within the nation, has linked over 500,000 low-income residents in Washington to the internet, with many experiencing online connectivity for the first time. Additionally, the company's NOW WiFi offers high-speed service with seamless connection at a starting price point of $30 per month, an inclusive approach that accommodates the diverse economic spectrum of the community.
