A series of incidents this past weekend put Pierce County law enforcement on high alert. Starting in the early morning of May 19th, deputies were led on a high-speed chase after recognizing a male with an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender. According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department blotter, stop sticks were deployed to stop the vehicle before a Precision Immobilization Technique, or PIT maneuver, brought the pursuit to an end. The suspect, a 48-year-old male, was subsequently apprehended and charged with kidnapping, drug possession, eluding, and failing to register as a sex offender after hostages were allegedly found inside his truck.
In another incident, a juvenile caused substantial damage to two police vehicles stationed at the University Place Precinct on May 17. Surveillance footage caught a 14-year-old girl jumping on the hoods and defacing the cars with a marker. The same source reports that when approached by a deputy, the girl responded with physical aggression, biting and kicking the officer. The minor has been taken to Remann Hall Juvenile Detention Center and is facing charges for felony assault of a police officer and felony malicious mischief.
That same day, neighbors reported gunshots from a residence on the 17000 block of 6th Ave. Ct. E. Deputies arriving on the scene gained consent to search the property, where they discovered four individuals and a 19-year-old male with a firearm recently reported stolen. He was booked for possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a prohibited weapon, and a weapons discharge violation.
The last call of the weekend saw deputies respond to reports of an explosion in Frederickson. The night before, security at a business complex witnessed a vehicle toss an explosive from its window at the intersection of 180th St E and 50th Ave E. The Pierce County Sheriff's Bomb Squad arrived to investigate, and while the details are still unfolding, video evidence from the scene has been collected.
