Yesterday morning, a violent carjacking incident unfolded on Friendship Avenue in Pittsburgh, leaving a trail that led authorities to the alleged perpetrator. At around 11:00 a.m., Pittsburgh Police were alerted by ShotSpotter to two rounds fired and responded to the call from the 5100 block of Friendship Avenue, according to a public safety announcement shared on the City of Pittsburgh's website.
When they arrived at the scene, they met a man who claimed to be the victim of the carjacking. He told officers that during the incident, he had fired two shots at the assailant, who, in turn, had absconded with his vehicle. Despite this confrontation, Pittsburgh Police officers did not engage in a pursuit when the vehicle was spotted heading out of the city, eastbound. Instead, they issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for the stolen car.
It was not long after that Pitcairn Police spotted a car driving haphazardly that matched the description of the stolen vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated in the 4400 block of Broadway Boulevard, where the responding officers discovered the driver wounded with two gunshot injuries, one to the arm and one to the shoulder. An EMS agency immediately transported the wounded individual to a local hospital, with his condition being reported as stable.
Upon further investigation, Pittsburgh Police identified the injured man as the suspect in the earlier reported carjacking. Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit have taken over the case since the crime began within their jurisdiction. Additional evidence was collected at the original scene by the Mobile Crime Unit, but no other investigation details have been released.
