Prairie Farms Dairy has announced the immediate shutdown of its Midtown Memphis processing facility, a move described by the company as a structural adjustment to consolidate operations. The closure will affect approximately 120 employees, but some will continue working to ensure uninterrupted product distribution, as stated in a WREG report. The affected workers are being encouraged to apply for vacancies at other Prairie Farms locations, despite the fact that the company's recruitment page shows very limited opportunities within the region.
According to Action News 5, the closure of the facility is part of a broader strategic initiative aimed at ensuring more efficient and reliable service to Prairie Farms' customers. Employees impacted by the Memphis plant's closure were invited to consider open positions available at the company's other sites, including an open driving position in Jackson, Tennessee, and one in Paragould, Arkansas.
Prairie Farms, headquartered in Illinois has assured that distribution throughout the Memphis area will remain intact, routing products through regional centers in Memphis and Jackson. As noted in a statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, the company has pledged to provide products and services in the market without interruption, reconstructing its logistics approaches after the shut down.
The Memphis manufacturing plant has a history stretching back to 1927, as cited in information from local history blogger and former city planner Josh Whitehead shared by FOX13 Memphis. Before its life as a dairy processing site, it was East End Park, an entertainment venue. "Our Memphis team has contributed significantly to our mission of delivering fresh, high quality dairy products to families across the region," Prairie Farms Dairy Chief Executive Officer Matt McClelland stated, underscoring the historic significance of the site that now faces the end of an era.
