A pregnant woman has been left in critical condition after a hit-and-run incident in the Orange Mound area of Memphis, as confirmed by local authorities. The harrowing event took place around 9 p.m. this past Saturday, at the intersection of Grand Street and Saratoga Avenue, with the Memphis Police Department responding shortly after.

The incident was first relayed to officers by a man, who claimed he and the pregnant woman were engaged in conversation in the street when the collision occurred, Action News 5 reports. He told police a speeding black car approached them, which he avoided by leaping onto the sidewalk, but the woman did not move away in time and was consequently struck.

The Memphis Police Department indicated that the suspect vehicle is a black sedan, probably a Honda, which had rear-ended another car, leading to the woman's injuries, according to FOX13 Memphis. Following the incident, the car fled the scene heading south on Grand Street towards Park Avenue.

The woman reported to the police from the hospital that she was conversing with her cousin by the curb, speaking to friends in a black sedan, when the hit-and-run occurred. "The car she was next to hit her and threw her on the sidewalk," the victim recalled, as FOX13 recounted. The aftermath saw all involved vehicles departing the area, leaving her alone and injured.

Authorities are investigating the crash, having located an RTCC (Real Time Crime Center) camera at the northwest corner of the intersection. It's believed the camera may have captured footage that could shed light on the hit-and-run incident. The Memphis Fire Department transported the woman to The Med in critical condition, where she narrated her ordeal to the police. As the search for the driver continues, the Memphis community finds itself rattled by this act of irresponsibility and the callous disregard for a life teetering on the edge of two worlds—the one we all share, and the one she was preparing to bring forth.
