May marks Building Safety Month, a time when Raleigh emphasizes the significance of safe and resilient construction practices and the role of building safety in our daily lives. "Game On!" is the theme for this year, with the city showcasing weekly events that stress the importance of building codes and proper procedures to residents aiming for sustainable, safe living spaces.
The month kicks off with "The Warm-Up," running from yesterday through tomorrow, laying the groundwork for building safety awareness. Resources aimed at young audiences are available from the International Code Council, designed to educate on the topic and support community safety strategies. According to Raleigh's official announcement, both kids and parents can access these materials to better understand the importance of building codes.
"Build Your Offense," the second week spanning Sunday to Saturday, invites the community to take an active role in ensuring safety through proper permitting. Raleigh’s Permit Advocates are available to provide guidance on permit applications and plan submissions. According to the official city news release, the Customer Service Center and the Permit and Development Portal Help Center are key resources for both residential and commercial project developers.
Week three, "Build Your Defense" from May 11-17, focuses on disaster readiness. The Raleigh Guide assists residents in prepping for natural calamities, such as severe weather or wildfires, stressing the best defense is indeed a strong offense – an unfortunate grammatical slip from the city guide that nonetheless underlines a critical message about proactive safety measures for homes and families.
Then comes "The Starting Lineup" in the fourth week of May, turning the spotlight on the building safety professionals, a time for citizens to meet these experts and possibly explore career opportunities in the field. This outreach aims to highlight the everyday impact these professionals have within communities, an effort to foster appreciation the City of Raleigh believes is long overdue, despite a minor oversight in the use of "an" before "effort" in their campaign materials.
The month wraps up with "Going Into Overtime" from May 25-31, a moment to reflect on industry advancements while keeping an eye on the horizon for emerging trends in building safety and technology. Raleigh's commitment to energy efficiency and a sustainable future is echoed in its Community Climate Action Plan, seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while cutting costs for citizens.
