A man from Redford Township is facing charges of assault with intent to murder after a shooting incident outside Ferndale's Orchid Theatre last month. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Coreyontai DeShawn Rmon Hammonds, is also charged with weapons offenses related to the event, which took place in the early hours of April 13, FOX 2 Detroit reports.
Ferndale Police officers on foot patrol responded to gunshots heard at approximately 12:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Woodward Alley between Nine Mile and West Troy Street. They found a 29-year-old man from Warren with a gunshot wound to his groin near the back entrance to the nightclub located at 141 W. Nine Mile Road, as was stated by Audacy.
The victim was quickly attended to by the officers and then taken to the hospital for further care. He was ultimately released after receiving the required medical treatment. An investigation following the incident implicated Hammonds, further supported by the Flock Safety camera footage, as the individual who fired the shots. This indicates a premeditated altercation, as police believe that the shooter and victim were acquainted before the incident. This was confirmed by footage and other investigative tools employed by Ferndale police investigators and the FBI's Oakland County Gang and Violent Crime Task Force, which played a pivotal role in the arrest of Hammonds, according to a press release by Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi, as per CBS News Detroit.
