The College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati has recently announced a notable addition to its roster. Avan Yu, a renowned pianist recognized for his technical mastery and emotive interpretations, will join the institution's Piano Department faculty. Yu's career has been marked by international acclaim, with performances in eminent concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. His talents have been described by The West Australian as "glittering virtuosity," and according to La Presse, he delivers "astonishing sensitivity" in his performances.

Yu's journey in music has brought him accolades from several international piano competitions. Notably, he was the youngest competitor ever to win the Canadian Chopin Piano Competition at the age of 17. Also in his trophy cabinet, first prizes from the Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia and the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, affairs where his exceptional artistry was on full display. His collaboration roster boasts eminent figures such as Yo-Yo Ma and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, establishing him, as a powerful force in the classical music scene.

Educated under the guidance of Horacio Gutiérrez and Klaus Hellwig, among others, Yu is a proud alumnus of the Universität der Künste Berlin and the Manhattan School of Music, where he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. His scholarship brought Canadian audiences closer to the work of Hans Abrahamsen through his doctoral thesis which examined Abrahamsen's "Left, alone" for piano left hand and orchestra. This piece was performed by Yu in Toronto, together with the Esprit Orchestra and conductor Alex Pauk.

Yu's commitments extend beyond the concert stage. He currently holds the position of Artistic and Executive Director of the Muzewest Concerts Society and has been active on the juries of various competitions, including the Canadian Chopin Piano Competition. His experience as an adjudicator is a testament to his keen ear for musical talent, competence and his dedication to nurturing the next generation of pianists. Yu's own discography, including a critically acclaimed Naxos release featuring Liszt transcriptions, underscores his palpable impact on the classical music recording industry.

CCM's Dean, Dean Pete Jutras, has expressed enthusiasm over Yu's appointment, citing the immense value he brings to the institution's academic and artistic landscape. "Dr. Yu is a sought-after soloist, chamber and recording artist who has performed in major venues across the world. His teaching and artistry will add great value to CCM’s Piano Department," Romanstein stated through UC News. Engagement with an artist of Yu's caliber signals CCM's ongoing commitment to excellence in musical education and performance.
