Royal Oak is tackling its infamous parking problem, a source of perennial frustration among residents and business owners. According to CBS News, the city is seeking community feedback to inform proposed changes to the current system, which has been widely critiqued for issues ranging from cost to lack of grace periods. The next opportunity for public input will be at a community open house set for Wednesday at the Royal Oak Farmer's Market.

City leaders are actively exploring options with several new parking vendors, aiming to introduce a more user-friendly system by 2026. As FOX 2 Detroit reports, these proposed changes include a shift away from heavily automated systems criticized for sending tickets via mail after capturing license plates with cameras. Plans are to reintroduce staff who can work the parking meters and issue tickets in person.

The parking debacle has particularly impacted Royal Oak businesses. Salon owner Johnny Nikollaj shared with ClickOnDetroit, "The worst. Terrible. A really bad idea from the get-go," referring to the back-in parking initiative outside his business on Washington Avenue. His business and others have felt repercussions as customers avoid coming to the area, deterred by the cumbersome parking arrangements.

Amidst these discussions, city officials also plan to host two open houses to demo the technologies from prospective vendors, engaging residents to provide input on what they’d prefer in the new system.
