A tragic car crash in Ruskin, Florida, claimed the lives of four adults after their vehicle swerved off the road and collided with a house on Shell Point Road West and 32nd Street Northwest. Hillsborough County deputies, who responded to the scene around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, found the wreckage but reported no injuries among the home's occupants and no indications of criminal activity, according to WTSP.
This incident has brought to light longstanding safety concerns shared by local residents. Neighbors in the area had been repeatedly calling for traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps or a stop sign to address the issues of speeding and accidents that have plagued their neighborhood. Mark Larson, a resident whose home was struck in the crash, expressed his frustration and dismay. "We've made this evident to the county, we've told them something is going to happen," Larson told WFLA. His dread was fully realized when the fatal crash occurred. Larson had been contacting county officials since 2019, requesting intervention.
Julie Coleman, another resident whose home was destroyed by the crash, said, "There’s been deaths. Four people have died, and all we need was some stop signs." Coleman told WFLA that the county needs to make the road safer, highlighting a pattern of incidents, including another crash where a vehicle flipped, casting its driver into her driveway. With repeated unanswered calls for traffic calming measures, the Colemans feel they have no choice but to leave their community.
Despite requests for a speed study in the area, county officials previously stated that there was not an excessive speeding issue, as shared by Larson with FOX 13. However, the same neighbor pointed out the discrepancy between the official reports and the community's experience. "We've been denied several times from the county, trying to get some relief at this intersection," Larson said. He argues that local realities should have been enough to spur action, hoping now that the crash will send a clear message to officials.
