The Sacramento Police Department is launching its annual Click It or Ticket campaign from May 12 to June 1 to enforce seat belt and child safety seat laws. Extra officers will be on patrol during this time, focusing on drivers and passengers not following the law, particularly those with improperly secured children, as reported by the Sacramento Police Department.
"Wearing a seat belt should be automatic for all drivers and passengers every trip," Sacramento Police Sergeant Anna Mahoney said. The statement is part of a campaign addressing traffic safety. National and state data shows that fatalities among unbelted vehicle occupants have decreased. In 2022, 11,302 people died in crashes while not wearing seat belts, as stated by the Sacramento Police Department.
According to the Sacramento Police Department on their Facebook page, 842 people died in vehicle crashes without seat belts in California, an 8.4% decrease from the previous year. State law requires children under 2 to be in rear-facing car seats unless they exceed certain size limits. Children under 8 must use a car seat or booster, and no child under 8 can sit in the front seat without the proper restraint. Parents are encouraged to use the "Five-Step Test" to check when their child is ready to use a seat belt without a booster.
