During the winter months, the City of Sacramento activated its weather respite centers more than 130 times to provide shelter during periods of cold and rain. Data from the Department of Community Response shows the centers offered temporary shelter to unsheltered residents throughout the season, according to the City of Sacramento.
From October 2024 to March 2025, the Outreach and Engagement Center and the North 5th Street Navigation Center provided more than 3,200 bed nights as part of the City of Sacramento’s seasonal weather respite program. The Outreach and Engagement Center was activated 79 times, averaging 34 people sheltered per night and accepting families. The North 5th Street facility was activated 52 times, averaging 11 adults per night. Both operated at no additional cost to the city. “Seasonal weather respite is a critical part of the City’s overall strategy to protect unsheltered residents during severe weather conditions,” said Department of Community Response Director Brian Pedro, as reported by the City of Sacramento.
Sacramento County and Sacramento Regional Transit are working with the City of Sacramento to provide shelter and transportation services during periods of extreme heat. Facilities such as the North A Shelter and the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center Gym are made available to individuals seeking shelter. These weather-respite operations are activated based on forecasts from the National Weather Service. Details about the program and activation criteria can be found on the City of Sacramento website.
