The San Antonio Central Library, a distinctive landmark known for its "Enchilada Red" color, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Opening its doors on May 20, 1995, designed by famed architect Ricardo Legorreta, the library has become a staple in the community, supporting millions of residents and visitors throughout three decades. As reported by the City of San Antonio's official news release, the festivities are set to take place this Saturday, with a Kickoff to Summer event from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The anniversary celebration will commence at 10:30 a.m. with a ceremony which, featuring Mayor Ron Nirenberg among other notable figures, will also see the attendance of Library Board of Trustees Chair Juspreet Kaur and Library Director Sukrit Goswami, along with Henry Cisneros, former Mayor and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Speaking to the City of San Antonio's official news release, Cisneros, responsible for the voter-approved 1989 bond that funded the library's construction, will also be part of the proceedings.

Post-ceremony, there are a host of free, family-friendly activities slated for the public's enjoyment. Attendees can take part in a library scavenger hunt, engage in various crafts, snap photos at a selfie booth, and enjoy performances by classical guitarist Brenda Cervantes and local DJ Bonnie Cisneros, known as DJ Despeinada. In line with the celebratory spirit, eventgoers will be treated to a free paleta as they make their way out, while supplies last.

Residents with a personal connection to the Central Library have the opportunity to leave a lasting impression by contributing to the Community Memory Wall. The library invites people to pen their favorite memories or submit copies of images and artwork to this mural in the lobby, which, after the celebration, will be archived in SAPL’s Texana and Genealogy Department. The library's statement in the official news release made it clear that items contributed will not be returned.

In addition to marking the Central Library's 30 years of service, the event will also launch the Summer with SAPL program. This series features free activities throughout June and July, aiming to enrich the community's engagement with literature and learning. Further details on the celebration can be found in the Library’s events calendar, while general information about the San Antonio Public Library's services and locations is accessible via their website or by contacting the staff by phone or chat.
