The San José Police Department (SJPD) will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 9:00 PM to 3:00 AM. The exact location has not yet been disclosed. The department strategically selects checkpoint locations based on data identifying areas with a higher incidence of impaired driving-related collisions to enhance public safety.

In a statement addressing community concerns, Lieutenant Nqui Scherry emphasized the risks associated with impaired driving, per the San José Police Department, “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” she stated. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

In addition to enforcement, the SJPD is using this opportunity to educate the public. Drivers are reminded that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption; certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect one’s ability to drive safely. Furthermore, while cannabis use, both medicinal and recreational, is legal in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.

The consequences of driving under the influence are severe. Offenders face an average cost of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with the potential suspension of their driver’s license.

This DUI checkpoint, along with others throughout the year, is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of all who share the road.
