The National Weather Service (NWS) in Charlotte, NC has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until noon EDT today, covering parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Residents and visitors in the watch areas should stay alert for a line of strong to severe thunderstorms capable of causing wind damage and isolated tornadoes throughout the morning.
According to the NWS forecast, Charlotte can expect a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 am, with the possibility of a shift towards clearer skies and a high near 88 degrees as the day progresses. The early morning update noted a humidity at 57% and wind speeds from the northwest at 13 mph. Forecasts also indicate a noteworthy drop in temperatures with mostly clear nights anticipated, dipping to lows around 64-67 degrees.
For the rest of the week, Charlotte and the surrounding regions will continue to experience a medley of weather conditions, with several chances for showers and thunderstorms, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday where chances of precipitation rise to 40% and 60%, respectively. The weather is expected to improve towards the latter part of the week, with a return to sunny skies and more moderate highs in the mid-70s by Friday.
The NWS has also stated that there's a hazardous weather outlook currently in place. "Spotters are requested to forward any reports of large hail, damaging winds, tornadoes, or flash flooding to our office," the NWS announced, pointing towards the importance of community reporting in assessing the storms' impacts. While the severe weather is anticipated to weaken throughout the day, individuals should remain cautious and heed local advisories, keeping an eye on the changing conditions as the potential for severe weather continues into the afternoon.
