In what appears to be a financial boon for the locals of Shelby County, Mayor Lee Harris has announced a proposed reduction in property tax rates. Unveiled yesterday, this proposal aims to deliver a 20 percent decrease from the existing $3.39 to $2.73. A move of this nature hasn't been witnessed in over two decades, as the last time residents enjoyed a rate below $3.00 was 27 years ago.

The potential drop in the tax rate carries the promise of lowering property tax bills for thousands of Shelby County inhabitants. According to a release by Shelby County, Mayor Harris is accentuating the contrast between Shelby County's fiscal direction, and that of neighboring cities, all of which have either increased taxes or are considering it.

"This budget, and this historic property tax rate cut, means more money in the pockets for working families," Mayor Harris stated. He continued, "While every city in Shelby County has increased taxes or contemplated it, I propose that Shelby County Government manage its finances like we all do in our households, we don’t spend more than what we receive. We can achieve this like we always have, with shrewd and careful financial management," as noted by the same release.

Mayor Harris is pushing a plan to cut property taxes by tightening the county’s budget instead of raising tax rates. The proposal now heads to the Shelby County Commission for debate. If approved, it could set a new example of how careful spending and financial discipline can lead to lower taxes, potentially putting more money back in residents’ pockets.
