If you've been itching to casually run into your local Sherburne County Commissioners and maybe share a side of guac, mark your calendars for June 3. A recent announcement has indicated that the commissioners plan to take a break from policy debates and enjoy a laid-back lunch at Vitta's Mexican Grill in Big Lake.
This is not a usual strategic luncheon or decision-making session, but rather a social event where you won't hear anything about county budget allocations or infrastructure planning. The commissioners have made it clear, no County business will be discussed during their midday rendezvous. Even so, community members who are curious to see their local officials in a less formal environment have the green light to show up, as space permits. But be reminded, you'll be there to observe, not to participate.
It's not every day that government officials explicitly state that they're off the clock, which is why this no-agenda gathering at Vitta's Mexican Grill is something of a novelty. As detailed by the Sherburne County announcement, "Members of the public who want to attend to observe will be accommodated to the extent practicable and allowed by the hosting venue." So if you're planning on going, consider calling ahead, since the venue's capacity is the only ceiling on your civic stalking.
For those with questions, or perhaps looking to confirm that this isn't some newfangled method of open-air government, County Administrator Bruce Messelt is the man to talk to. You can reach him at (763) 765-3006 or shoot an email to [email protected]; he should be able to clarify any queries. Just maybe save the hard-hitting questions for the regular county meetings, where public discourse is, well, expected.
