As Southern California braces for an extraordinary rise in temperatures this weekend, the National Weather Service in San Diego forecasts highs up to 20 degrees above average for inland regions. According to NWS San Diego, Friday will see a significant heat spike, with coastal areas hitting between 74 and 83 degrees, while the inland valleys bake at temperatures from 86 to 95 degrees. Saturday is predicted to push even higher, forcing the mercury up to dangerous levels, particularly in lower deserts with expected peaks of 103 to 108 degrees.

The warming trend, driven by strengthening high-pressure aloft, is leading experts to anticipate potential extreme heat warnings, especially for the lower deserts and possibly the Inland Empire. "NBM probabilities for high temperatures exceeding 100 on Saturday for the Inland Empire are greatest along the lower inland slopes of the central Santa Ana Mountains at 85 to 95 percent, followed by areas along the Elsinore convergence zone at 70 to 80 percent," a statement obtained by the NWS Area Forecast Discussion explains. Despite an expected slight cooling on Sunday, the forecast warns of continuous extreme temperatures for the region.

As the weekend's heatwave approaches, public health officials may take precautions, such as issuing advisories or opening cooling centers for vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to prepare for the sweltering conditions by keeping hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and checking on elderly neighbors or individuals without access to air conditioning.

However, relief is on the horizon as a significant low-pressure system is predicted to sweep into California early next week. "A large low pressure system moving inland along the West Coast
will bring cooling for Sunday through Tuesday with Tuesday high temperatures as much as 15 to 20 degrees below average for the higher elevations in the mountains," according to the NWS Area Forecast Discussion. This system will deepen the marine layer, leading to a more widespread cover of night and morning coastal low clouds. Commuters should brace for potential visibility reductions during their early travels.
