In a late-night operation, the Springfield Police Department's Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), alongside the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit West, made three arrests and seized two illicit firearms and quantities of crack-cocaine. According to the Springfield Police Department, the bust occurred after a search warrant was served at a Salem Street apartment.
The operation, leading to these arrests, had been brewing for several months, stemming from an investigation into nefarious activities at the residence. Detectives, acting on tips of drug deals and firearms within, were granted and executed a search warrant last night. After executing the search warrant, three suspects were detained, with the oldest being Darin Smith, 40, and two minors, aged 17 and 16, whose names and details are withheld due to their age.
Found during the search were two illegal firearms—one loaded—and more than 9 grams of crack-cocaine on the 17-year-old and approximately 2.5 grams of crack-cocaine on the 16-year-old. In addition to drugs and guns, detectives also recovered over $450 in cash from the scene. Smith is facing multiple felony charges, including possession of a firearm during a felony, previous violent/drug-related convictions, and the intention to distribute a Class B drug, among others.
In the wake of the arrests, the Springfield Police Department has not released the booking photos or specific charges for the juveniles involved, adhering to legal protections for underage offenders. The recovery of the firearms and drugs follows concerted efforts by the Springfield Police to crack down on illegal gun possession and drug trafficking within the community. Without a license and on a second offense, Smith has been charged with carrying a firearm.
