
A Sterling Heights police officer demonstrated quick thinking and valor as he rescued a kayaker from the dangers of the Clinton River. According to ClickOnDetroit, Officer Nikolas Bruno received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 p.m. last Saturday alerting him to a kayaker in distress in Riverland Park. Upon arriving on the scene, he found a woman gripping a fallen tree in the river's center without a life jacket and in clear panic.
A second victim, the woman's daughter, also struggled after losing her kayak she was located perched atop a log dam, rescued later by the Sterling Heights Fire Department this situation unfolded over what should have been a serene Saturday, turned into a dramatic series of events that would see the kayakers fighting for safety amidst the river's whims.
In the midst of the chaos, a bystander stepped forward, offering her own life jacket to the stranded kayaker, a move pivotal to the woman's survival. As reported by CBS Detroit, Bruno secured the safety device around the victim and then guided her safely to the shore. The rescued woman later shared with the authorities that she, along with her daughter and niece, were on their first kayaking outing when her vessel was snared by a submerged tree, which led to her capsize and subsequent injury.
