The San Antonio Police Department has released the name of the suspect involved in a shooting incident with a police officer at a local Thai Hut restaurant. According to FOX San Antonio, 23-year-old Sheldon Malachi Butts was the individual shot after an alleged theft of a pair of scissors.

The confrontation took place last Friday around 12:10 p.m. when an officer, responding to the call of the theft, tried to engage with Butts. It was during this interaction that the situation escalated. "The suspect attacked the officer. At that point, the officer used his pepper spray to try and control the suspect. It did not work," San Antonio Police Chief William McManus described in a statement obtained by News 4 San Antonio. Following the failed attempt to subdue the suspect with pepper spray, the altercation continued to intensify.

Chief McManus further detailed that Butts "attempted to get the officer's weapon, and at that point the officer pushed back and had to use his weapon to stop the assault." The officer-involved shooting is a stark reminder of the split-second decisions law enforcement officials can be faced with in the line of duty, as per FOX San Antonio.

As a result of the incident, Butts was transported to a nearby hospital and is reportedly in critical condition.
