Yesterday, a tragic collision occurred on Interstate 680 when a wrong-way driver struck another vehicle, resulting in one fatality and major injuries. The incident, which involved a dark-colored Toyota RAV4 and a white Dodge Challenger, took place on the transition ramp from eastbound State Route 24 to northbound I-680, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Contra Costa Area.
The wrong-way driver, who was later identified as the operator of the Toyota, crashed into the Dodge Challenger at approximately 12:18 AM. According to CHP's initial reports, the driver of the Dodge succumbed to their injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The Toyota driver, who survived with major injuries, was transported to a hospital for treatment, where it was established that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. The subsequent investigation by the CHP officers on the scene led to the wrong-way driver's arrest on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
Traffic on the ramp was stopped immediately following the crash and remained closed until the CHP completed their on-site investigation, reopening again at approximately 8:36 AM. The closure impacted morning traffic but was necessary to ensure a thorough investigation and safety for all involved, the CHP said in a social media post.
