Early this morning, St. Louis became the focus of a violent confrontation resulting in multiple fatalities, including a triple homicide suspect, authorities report. At approximately 4:00 a.m., officers of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department descended upon a residence in the 5100 block of Wells following an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunfire detection system.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male, later identified as 57-year-old Tyrone Mason, on the front porch with a gunshot wound. Mason was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a full-scale investigation. As detectives began collecting evidence with assistance from the ATF, they secured the perimeter and awaited further legal authorization to search the premises, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
The situation escalated when at around 7:00 a.m., a man emerged from inside the house, briefly conversed with law enforcement personnel, and then returned inside. The man, who was subsequently identified as the 61-year-old suspect James Carter, reappeared shortly with a rifle in hand, engaging in gunfire with a SLMPD officer and an ATF agent before retreating back into the home.
The SLMPD's SWAT team was summoned to the location, and upon entry to the home, they found Carter deceased near the front doorway. Along with Carter, two other victims were found – 34-year-old Ariel Eastling in the living room and 58-year-old James Rodriguez in the basement. In an intensive sweep, SWAT officers recovered a total of five guns, three of which were near the suspect. Throughout the confrontation, no law enforcement officers or federal agents sustained injuries. The SLMPD officer involved is reported to have three years of service, and is 28 years old.
The investigation into the tragic events is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances leading to the standoff and shootings. More details are expected to be released as the multi-agency inquiry progresses.
