The City of Tukwila is extending an open invitation to its residents and members of the neighboring communities for a day of remembrance and celebration at the Fifth Annual Juneteenth Commemoration. Set against the backdrop of the Sullivan Center at Tukwila Village, the event themed "Echoes of Freedom: Past, Present & Future," assembles voices of history and heralds of the now, under the open sky, marking the enduring spirit of emancipation, as reported by the City of Tukwila.
According to the City of Tukwila's official announcement, the schedule for Thursday, June 19, commences at 11 a.m. and wraps up by 1 p.m. At no cost, attendees can look forward to enjoying light refreshments prepared by Chef Dayo Edwards of DayoSense Catering, who's culinary craft interweaves the joyful essence of her Nigerian heritage into the fabric of Seattle's food scene.
Entertainment for the commemoration includes a variety of performers, starting with Jaleah Larkins, who will present the Black National Anthem. Following her at 11:30 a.m., DaNell Daymon & Greater Works Choir is set to perform, leading into a spoken word performance by Will Rideout at midday. The event further anticipates a keynote speaker, whose name is yet to be disclosed, and will close with line dancing led by Toni Bailey, which invites attendees to “Bring your fan!” as per the City of Tukwila.
Sean Lewis and the Tukwila community, with help from Public Health – Seattle and King County, will host an event with music and free giveaways. This yearly celebration shows Tukwila’s commitment to honoring African American heritage. In 2020, the City Council passed Resolution 1992, officially recognizing June 19 (Juneteenth) each year as a time to remember the struggles and celebrate the strength and resilience of the African American community, as reported by the City of Tukwila.
