Two men have been arrested following a violent confrontation in Frank Ogawa Plaza, near Oakland City Hall, which erupted into gunfire on Tuesday. The Oakland Police Department confirmed the arrest of Lamont Williams and Derrick Johnson, both of whom were suffering from injuries sustained during the altercation. A third assailant, believed to have been involved, is currently being sought by the police.
Details revealed by the OPD and reported by KTVU suggest that Williams allegedly struck Johnson with a chair, which led to Johnson reportedly shooting Williams in the abdomen. Amid the chaos, a companion of Williams is said to have shot Johnson in the leg.
The incident, which the OPD stated occurred shortly after 4:30 PM, led to the rapid response of nearby officers who discovered both Williams and Johnson wounded. They were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. The OPD has not provided a description or the identity of the third individual involved.
In a succinct account of the Oakland Police Department, the severity of the incident is evident, with the department's Felony Assault Unit taking the lead in the investigation. Henry K. Lee, in an update on social media, reiterates the sequence of events that led to the arrests of both Johnson and Williams.
