Two separate homicides in Memphis, both resulting in arrests, have marked a pronounced day for the U.S. Marshals Service. On Tuesday, in unrelated cases, 27-year-old Alvin Justice and 20-year-old Damarrius Mathis were taken into custody, reported Action News 5. Justice, accused of a 2024 homicide involving victim Charles Terry, was found on Washington Avenue, while Mathis was apprehended on Black Raven Drive related to a March incident that left Deonte Reed deceased and a female wounded.
Justice's charges encompass second-degree murder, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and theft of property. It was his alleged use of an assumed identity that didn't halt his arrest by the authorities. Conversely, Mathis faced warrants for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and employing a firearm with intent to commit a felony, as per FOX13 Memphis. Both suspects were reported to have been taken into custody without incident.
Memphis Police highlighted the significance of interagency cooperation in these cases. "These arrests are a testament to the power of collaboration. When agencies come together with one mission — justice — there is no place for violent offenders to hide," said Memphis Police Chief Davis in a statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Team and MPD's Fugitive Unit were some of the departments involved in the successful captures.
Additional context to the arrests was provided by WREG, revealing that Charles Terry, the victim in Alvin Justice's case, was a 79-year-old retired police officer and Army veteran. Details of the initial incidents that led to the arrests unfolded across Los Angeles Street for Justice's alleged crime, and Chelsea Avenue for the scene of the crime attributed to Mathis, who was caught in the act of fleeing in Hickory Hill.
