Union County’s Septic System Repair Program, funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), recently completed a repair project for a homeowner in Wingate. The program helps low- and moderate-income residents repair failing septic systems.

According to the Union County, Karla Richmond received a full replacement of her 30-year-old septic system in March 2025. Her previous system caused frequent backups and overflows. The new system uses a "no-gravel" plastic chamber design. Richmond, who is disabled, said she would not have been able to afford the repair without the program.

The program began in 2022 to improve public health and protect property by ensuring septic systems function properly. While applications are currently closed, Union County may reopen the program based on community demand.

County staff handle application reviews and site assessments, while weather conditions can impact the construction timeline. Traci Colley, Union County’s Public Health Director, said the program supports both public health and environmental safety.

Richmond noted the professionalism of the contractors during the installation. Jason May, Union County’s Director of Budget and Grants Management, said the program also eases financial stress for families needing repairs.

Residents can check the CDBG Program page for updates on future application opportunities.
