In a move that places youth and student perspectives at the helm of higher education decision-making, Governor Katie Hobbs has named University of Arizona student Felipe Garcia to the Arizona Board of Regents. Garcia, an active participant in community and academic affairs, will be taking over from outgoing Student Regent David Zaragoza whose term concludes at the end of June, as reported on the official announcement from the Governor's office.
Garcia's appointment is not only a nod to his academic pursuits in Political Science and Creative Intelligence and Innovation, but also a recognition of his substantial involvement in community service and leadership roles. "Felipe Garcia is committed to ensuring Arizona’s public university students succeed, and I am proud to appoint him to the Arizona Board of Regents," Governor Hobbs was quoted, affirming his confidence in Garcia's effectiveness as a student representative. Felipe will work alongside Regent Jadyn Fisher from NAU to represent student interests on the board, as per the Governor's Office.
The role of student regent is pivotal, offering students a voice in the governance of their institutions. Garcia brings to the table his experience as a former Presidential Chief of Staff for the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and a member on the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism. His engagement in these multiple realms signals his preparedness to handle the responsibilities that lie ahead in his two-year term.
A Tucson native, Garcia's roots and academic journey within the state position him uniquely to echo the sentiments and aspirations of his peers. In a statement celebrating his appointment, Garcia expressed his honor and excitement: "I am incredibly honored to be chosen by Governor Hobbs to represent Arizona students," Felipe told the media ensuring his commitment to the enrichment of the public university system. His previous tenure with Arizona Model United Nations, where he worked to broaden educational prospects for high schoolers, points to his dedication to broadening educational horizons for the youth of Arizona.
