The waters of Melton Lake were the stage for a historic first as the University of Tennessee rowing team hosted the inaugural Southeastern Conference (SEC) Rowing Championship. Tennessee secured runners-up status to Texas after a series of intense competitions that culminated in a down-to-the-wire final event. As reported by UT Daily Beacon, the Lady Vols earned second place with 78 points, finishing just shy of Texas' 83 points.
Throughout the event, both Tennessee and the champions, Texas, managed to impressively claim three wins each from the six races. "I never thought we'd had a chance at the points completely, because as a full team, Texas has been very, very deep at the conference championships in the Big 12," Tennessee head coach Kim Cupini told UT Daily Beacon. The highlight of the day was undeniably the First Varsity Eight race, where the first place was crucial to clinch to solidify the overall team victory.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey expressed his personal reward in witnessing the event, praising the competitors for their hard work and dedication. His enthusiasm was echoed by UT Rowing Head Coach Kim Cupini, who underscored the amazing atmosphere and support from fans at the Tennessee venue. "The SEC, hats off to them. They did an amazing job for the first time at this venue. No complaints at all; it was awesome," Cupini acclaimed in a statement obtained by WATE.
On the winning side, Texas' head coach Dave O'Neill acknowledged the tough competition as his Texas team faced down more challenges than ever before. "We knew we were going to be tested more than ever before, and that certainly proved to be the case," O'Neill noted, reflecting on the significance of winning the first SEC Championship. He shared with TexasLonghorns his pride in the team's performance and their three-week preparation plan before heading to the NCAA Championships.
The Lady Vols rowing team is now set to regroup and refocus as they look ahead to the NCAA Championships starting later this month. With the competitive spirit in no short supply, Cupini and her team are to certainly use their experience at the SEC Championship to further hone their skills and strategy. Tennessee's campaign at the NCAA Championships will start on May 30 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. Fans of rowing can look forward, also, to catching a re-airing of the SEC Rowing Championship yesterday at 6 p.m. on the SEC Network, as per information from TexasLonghorns.
