In a move aimed to aid local economies and provide quality nutrition, the USDA has decided to make a $16 million purchase of Oregon Pink Shrimp. This significant investment is set to benefit the family fishermen of the Oregon shrimp fleet, known for being deep-rooted in their coastal communities. Governor Tina Kotek celebrated the announcement, emphasizing the vital role of these businesses in statewide economic growth and family livelihoods. "USDA’s investment in our state will help our local economies grow and families make ends meet," Kotek said, according to a statement from the Governor's office.

The federal support arrives as a form of stability for the industry, which has had to navigate past challenges, including market disruptions due to tariff policies. It is intended to not only bolster local businesses but also ensure the inclusion of high-quality seafood in food assistance programs throughout Oregon and beyond. Oregon's Senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, along with Congresswoman Val Hoyle, have been instrumental in securing this support. "This commitment will help essential small businesses along the Oregon Coast stay afloat and weather the damage from Donald Trump’s destructive and needless tariffs," Wyden told the Governor's office.

Senator Merkley expressed these sentiments, highlighting the long-standing significance of the fisheries to the region. "Oregon’s fisheries have been the lifeblood of our coastal communities for generations, and when they thrive, the whole Oregon Coast thrives," Merkley stated in a press release. His remarks were supported by fellow members of Congress and industry representatives, who praised the collaborative efforts of state officials in facilitating the purchase.

Local industry figures voiced appreciation for the support, which comes during a period of market uncertainty. "We are incredibly grateful to Governor Kotek and Senators Wyden and Merkley for their strong support of our industry and their efforts, along with others in the Oregon delegation, to make this pink shrimp purchase happen," West Coast Seafood Processors Association Executive Director Lori Steele said. Nick Edwards of the Shrimp Producers Marketing Cooperative added, "This is a great day for Oregon Seafood communities." The assistance from state and federal officials is seen as a critical step in upholding Oregon's fishing communities and their contribution to the supply of sustainable protein for American families in need, as per statement obtained by the Governor's office.

The USDA's purchasing plan, a part of their Section 32 program, is detailed in a letter made available on the same State of Oregon news page. The initiative showcases how government entities can collaborate with local communities and industries to navigate through periods of economic challenge and foster growth in key sectors.
