Valley Metro is gearing up for a significant expansion of the light rail system that promises to reshape the public transit landscape in the Valley. The two forthcoming projects, the Capitol Extension and the I-10 West Extension, are moving closer to the construction phase. Juliana Vasquez-Keating, a representative for Valley Metro, confirmed the developments, telling ABC15, "These are going to happen."
The Capitol Extension seeks to link downtown with the copper dome, with hopes to begin construction in the upcoming year. Valley Metro is in the final stages of design, and according to Vasquez-Keating, the agency is eager to receive public input on how the two extensions will interlink. Meanwhile, the I-10 West Extension, known as 10WEST, is set to place light rail trains along the median of Interstate 10, extending westward to connect with key destinations like Desert Sky Mall and the Talking Stick Amphitheater. A detailed project description can be found on the Valley Metro website.
These extensions are being financed through a blend of state and federal funds, complemented by resources from ballot measures such as T2050, which received voter approval. To facilitate a seamless connection between the lifeblood of these two major arteries of transit, Valley Metro hosted a community meeting to canvass opinions and ideas. Attendee James Graef said, "I bike, and ride light rail everywhere, my number one priority is making it go as fast as possible," and expressed his preference for the northern route alternative, as reported by ABC15.
Further public outreach is planned for spring 2025 to define finer details of the project, like station locations and the Capitol Extension linkage, with an updated Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) in the works, which will, once finalized, be subjected to the scrutiny and potential approval of the Phoenix City Council. District 7 Councilmember Anna Hernandez highlighted the enduring importance of the project, stating, "Public transit can be used by multiple generations, so that’s why it’s important to bring more options to our residents," according to her interview with ABC15. With another meeting slated for Thursday at Neighborhood Ministries and further opportunity for online feedback available through June 2, residents are encouraged to have their say on how these extensions will pave the new pathways of commuting within the Valley.
