Yesterday in West Babylon, Long Island, the community gathered to honor the lives of Bella Trezza, 17, and Riley Goot, 18, who were killed in a car crash last September, during a memorial baseball game. Anthony Pagliuca, a survivor of the same accident, threw out the ceremonial first pitch, marking his recovery from life-threatening injuries and remembering the friends he lost, as reported by CBS News New York.
According to ABC 7 New York, the crash occurred when Michael Desmond ran a red light and struck the car carrying the five teenagers, resulting in the deaths of Trezza, Goot and Desmond himself, Pagliuca alongside Jack Murphy, and Austin Trezza, who survived but with Austin having lost his sister, Bella, in the accident, he alongside Pagliuca and Murphy stood on the mound with photos of their departed friends before a moment of silence was held and the game commenced.
Pagliuca, who studies at St. Anthony's and plans to attend SUNY Oneonta to pursue sports management in the fall, acknowledged the support he has received throughout his recovery and expressed his determination to honor his lost friends, saying, "It's his job to be the best that he could be for Bella and for Riley and so their memory will always live on," his mother, Keri Pagliuca, told CBS News New York. Despite experiencing multiple fractures and significant internal injuries, Anthony's attendance and participation in the game marked a point in his recovery and served as a moment of recognition for those affected by the incident.
The event also included a donation effort for the families of the victims. Northwell Health, the medical provider that treated Pagliuca, noted the extent of his injuries and the low probability of survival. The 17-year-old participated in the game as the starting pitcher. Following the game, Pagliuca, who does not recall the crash and is scheduled to begin therapy after the baseball season, stated, “Always work back to things you love,” and, “It's not about winning or losing. Just enjoying the moment,” according to ABC 7 New York.
