Wisconsin landowners have the opportunity to contribute to a cherished annual tradition, as the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks participants for the Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities set for Oct. 4-12. The DNR is reaching out to potential hosts who can provide at least 60 acres of land and are willing to accommodate a minimum of three hunters. Prospective landowners have until July 1, to submit an online application, ensuring their property is enlisted for this inclusive event.

"This special hunt has been providing hunters with disabilities accessible opportunities to deer hunt for over 30 years," Brooke VanHandel, DNR assistant deer and elk specialist, said in a statement obtained by Wisconsin DNR Newsroom. The initiative seeks to seamlessly extend the state's hunting legacy to everyone, keen on not leaving to exclude any individual from the experience because of a physical challenge or impairment. The DNR emphasizes that the success of such events solely relies on the collaboration and generosity of landowner sponsors.

Since its inception in 1992, the Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities has opened the door for roughly 400 hunters annually to join in Wisconsin's deep-rooted deer hunting culture. The event underscores a broader commitment by the DNR to provide a variety of hunting, fishing, and recreational permits specially crafted for individuals with disabilities, encapsulating the department's dedication to inclusivity.
