Students and staff at Milwaukee Area Technical College's Oak Creek campus were ordered to lock their doors and shelter in place for 41 minutes Wednesday night after police began searching the area for an armed suspect. Police contacted MATC around 9 p.m., and the all-clear followed around 9:45 p.m.
The lockdown began after the Oak Creek Police Department notified MATC officials around 9 p.m. that officers were combing the surrounding area for an armed suspect, according to CBS 58. The station reported that the police activity originated off-campus, and that officers searching the vicinity reported no confirmed sightings of the suspect on college grounds. WISN reported that a text message alert sent to MATC students instructed them to lock all doors and windows immediately and remain in their location while waiting for additional information.
A school spokesperson confirmed to WISN that the Oak Creek campus was on lockdown. Preliminary reports described an incident involving two people at a Motel 6 near 13th Street and College Avenue, close to the campus perimeter, according to WTMJ. The same report described police activity near the motel during the search.
How MATC Issues Its Emergency Alerts
The lock-and-shelter order reached students through a text message alert. The alert instructed students to lock all doors and windows immediately and remain in their location while waiting for additional information.
MATC lists four campuses: Downtown Milwaukee, Mequon, Oak Creek, and West Allis, according to the college. MATC's Public Safety Department has offices at the campuses, according to the college. The Oak Creek campus is one of MATC's listed campuses. The reports do not provide details about which academic programs are housed at Oak Creek or mention a Responder Commons lounge or an opening date.
A Corridor With a History of Police Activity
The commercial stretch of S. 13th Street near College Avenue has drawn law enforcement attention before. In a Hoodline report from May 2026, a police officer was injured while contacting a suspect outside a nearby motel near Interstate 94.
Precautionary lockdowns are not new to the MATC system. In October 2025, the Downtown Milwaukee campus was placed on lockdown after several masked individuals were spotted on campus, with Milwaukee police searching the campus and later issuing an all-clear, as Hoodline reported in its piece on masked individuals triggering that lockdown. Wednesday's Oak Creek incident involved a security protocol that was lifted after about 40 minutes.
The lockdown also comes as MATC continues to offer technical degree and certificate programs. Overall system enrollment was not specified in the reports.
It remains unclear whether Oak Creek police have since identified or apprehended the suspect involved in the incident, as initial reports confirmed only that no sightings were made on campus grounds.
