The Working Families Party (WFP) has solidified its position in the New York City mayoral race by naming Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani as its top choice. The progressive group's endorsement, which came in yesterday, follows months of deliberation and positions Mamdani at the forefront of their strategy to oust former Gov. Andrew Cuomo from his lead in the mayoral race, according to Gothamist.
The WFP's decision to endorse a slate of candidates is a play to influence the outcome using the city’s ranked-choice voting system, introduced in 2021. Behind Mamdani, the list includes City Comptroller Brad Lander, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, followed by state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, and state Sen. Jessica Ramos, marking a clear progressive lineup aimed to consolidate left-leaning votes and challenge Cuomo’s dominance. In a recent Emerson poll, Cuomo led with 35% against Mamdani's 23%, but that gap might narrow as the endorsements roll in, and progressive voters align their choices, NBC New York reported.
This endorsement may carry significance beyond the Democratic primary, as the Working Families Party has suggested it could nominate a separate candidate on its own ballot line in November if Cuomo secures the Democratic nomination. Tensions within the party have been evident; Mamdani’s campaign focuses on proposals like free public transit and city-operated grocery stores, in contrast to Lander, who is seen by some as moving toward the political center on issues such as policing. Lander now endorses hiring additional police officers and has critiqued the "defund the police" campaign as, "a failed political strategy," Gothamist noted.
Mamdani's grassroots momentum was evident when his call to support Speaker Adams resulted in her most lucrative fundraising day, paving the way for her to qualify for over two million dollars in matching funds. Early voting for the primaries kicks off on June 14, but before that, candidates will face-off in a much-anticipated debate on June 4, broadcasted by WNBC-TV and Telemundo 47/WNJU, as reported by NBC New York. The debate roster includes, notable figures like Cuomo, Lander, Mamdani, Myrie, Adams, and several others.
The political landscape is expected to shift in the coming days, with attention focused on a possible endorsement from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which could influence progressive voters. Her decision has not been announced, and observers are monitoring for any indication. The upcoming debate and the start of early voting are likely to clarify the progressive field and may affect Cuomo’s standing as the primary approaches.
