Residents of Wilbur have been invited to provide feedback on a proposed project to improve US 2 and State Route 21 for pedestrians, cyclists, and individuals using wheeled mobility aids. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) plans to repave SR 21 from Front Avenue SW to the US 2 intersection, as well as sections of US 2 through the town. This project is part of the state's Complete Streets initiative.

The upcoming workshop provides an opportunity for community feedback during the planning phase. WSDOT will discuss the Complete Streets features, aimed at improving accessibility and safety for all users of state highways. This initiative is in line with a law enacted last year, which requires Complete Streets provisions for all WSDOT projects with construction costs exceeding $500,000. Local residents will have the opportunity to influence the project’s direction.

For those wishing to participate in the discussion, an in-person session will be held at the Wilbur Community Center Auditorium. According to WSDOT, the event will begin with a brief presentation on the project at 5 p.m., followed by interactive activities designed to gather public input on walking, biking, and using mobility aids in Wilbur. The event will also provide an unsupervised area for children and refreshments for attendees.

A virtual session will also be available through Microsoft Teams from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to provide an option for broader participation. This allows community members to engage and provide feedback without attending in person. Those unable to attend the event in person can still participate and share their input on the project.

The event will open its doors at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, with a two-hour window for attendees to participate in discussions about the future of the town’s streetscapes. The workshop, available both in person and online, will provide residents an opportunity to share input on the circulation and accessibility of Wilbur’s roads.
