In a recent gesture to bring the community closer to its firefighters, the St. John Parish Fire Department handed over the chief's helmet to an honorary member for a day. Young Chief Jax Shirer took the helm on what, giving the public a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the day-to-day operations of the local heroes. St. John Parish Fire Department shared Chief Shirer's experience in a social media post.

His adventure began with a ride on Engine 513 en route to the Hemlock Fire Station, also known as Station 51. There, Captain Burke introduced the honorary chief to a drone demonstration, showed him how to conduct daily inspections on Ladder 517, and let him test his hose handling skills. Demonstrating at Station 54, the faux fire chief took part in the department's Physical Ability Assessment with some of the training activities including the stair stepper and the Keiser Sled. In the middle of the physical feats, lunch was on the menu at a local Chick-fil-A, recharging before the day's second half.

The department's maintenance warehouse was the next destination where they made Chief Shirer feel like part of the team, fitting him with his own bunker gear while unleashing a peek into the crucial world of equipment readiness and fleet maintenance. The dedication of the firefighters was apparent, as they seamlessly introduced the ins and outs of the operation to their young leader for the day.

Chief Shirer's day culminated with a visit to the Emergency Operations Center and the 911 Communications Center, where after Commander Chauvin walked him through the dispatch center's intricacies, surprisingly complex coordination and management of emergency calls didn't dampen his spirit. Shirer expressed his gratitude to the firefighters, saying he felt honored to witness firsthand the commitment they bring to their work every day. His sign-off included thanks given to the firefighters for their dedication after a tour of the dispatch center, which concluded his day.
