An 18-year-old accused in a fatal shooting close to Booker T. Washington High School will be held in custody without the possibility of bond. Valdemar Patterson faces charges for the murder of two fellow students, with a judge recently ruling that he should remain behind bars due to the severity of the charges and concerns about public safety.
During a preliminary hearing, Assistant District Attorney William Walsh urged the court to deny bond for Patterson, as reported by the district attorney's office. The defense's request for bond was opposed, and the judge decided that there was enough evidence for the case to proceed to a grand jury for indictment.
According to law enforcement, the incident took place on April 24th when a vehicle was seen arriving at the South City apartment complex, in close proximity to the high school. Surveillance video revealed four individuals with weapons disembarking from the car and then firing shots that fatally wounded the victims, identified as Christian Brown, age 17, and Darrius Wadley, age 18.
The shooting has sent ripples through the community and prompted a manhunt for the other suspects involved. While Patterson remains in custody, the search for additional individuals linked to the brutal killings continues. The loss of Brown and Wadley is felt deeply, with the investigation ongoing just steps from the educational institution where they were students, detailing the proximity of the violence to where young minds seek knowledge and growth.
