An unexpected turn of events unfolded at High Desert Detention Center when a 19-year-old visitor was booked into custody after deputies discovered marijuana in his car on the jail property. Joseph Contreras, the young man caught in the situation, now faces felony charges for smuggling contraband into a correctional facility. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, detention staff at HDDC were responsible for contacting and ultimately detaining Contreras. The statement released by the department detailed that about two pounds of marijuana and related products were seized, in addition to various denominations of U.S. currency found inside Contreras's vehicle.
Dedicated to keeping their facilities drug-free, the detention staff at HDDC are no strangers to such incidents. Despite the staff's vigilance, the illicit materials found on Contreras paint a concerning picture of narcotics attempting to breach the jail's defenses. The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department emphasized the importance of these interventions, noting that these contraband seizures are crucial for "maintaining the safety and security of staff and inmates." They stressed this action's role in minimizing drug-related instances and the potential for overdoses within the jails.
As the investigation continues, the department is seeking further information from the public. They have urged anyone with knowledge of these types of incidents to reach out. Confidentiality has been assured for those who prefer to remain anonymous, with the department providing a tip hotline and an option to leave information on the We-Tip website.
