An accident on the H-3 Freeway has left a 71-year-old woman in critical condition after a collision in the Harano Tunnel, according to reports from the Honolulu Police Department and local news sources. On Saturday around 2 p.m., the westbound driver collided with the back of a dump truck, resulting in her being trapped inside her vehicle. KHON2 provided initial details of this critical crash that occurred early this week.
Following the incident, the Honolulu Fire Department responded rapidly, working to extract the elderly driver from her car, which had become wedged underneath the large yellow container of the dump truck, both vehicles stopped in the shoulder lane. The Honolulu Police Department clarified that the woman was driving westbound when, traveling behind the dump truck, she rear-ended the vehicle. According to a KITV report, the car's hood was trapped as a result.
The woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services. Meanwhile, neither the 49-year-old male dump truck driver nor his 59-year-old female passenger sustained injuries in the crash. The male driver of the dump truck had the presence of mind to remain at the scene following the crash as confirmed by local authorities, as reported by KHON2.
A serious accident caused major traffic delays, closing westbound lanes for several hours. All lanes reopened around 7 p.m. after emergency crews cleared the scene, and traffic is now back to normal.
