As billows of smoke loomed over Richmond, residents were alerted to an air quality advisory issued by the Bay Area Air District, following a flaring event at the Chevron Refinery. The official advisory cautions that areas near and downwind of the plant, namely Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, Hercules, and parts of Solano County, might experience poor air quality due to the prevalent flaring, with conditions fluctuating based on meteorological shifts and the flaring's duration, as per the Bay Area Air District.
Local inhabitants are encouraged to heed instructions from public health authorities to ensure their well-being. The Air District is collaborating with emergency services to offer them crucial updates on meteorology and air quality factors relating to the incident. In addition, Air District inspectors have been deployed to the refinery to investigate the incident, respond to concerns from the public, and document any potential transgressions of air quality regulations.
Smoke from the flaring contains particulate matter and harmful pollutants, posing health risks even during short exposure times. To reduce potential harm, residents are advised to stay indoors with closed windows and doors if feasible, utilize car vent systems set to recirculate to avoid drawing in outside air, and consider indoor air filtration to mitigate smoke exposure. Particularly sensitive groups, including the elderly, children, and people with respiratory illnesses like asthma, emphysema, or COPD, are urged to exercise additional caution.
Meanwhile, Chevron Richmond took to Facebook to address community concerns, stating "Chevron Richmond is experiencing visible flaring and our workforce is working quickly to minimize and stop the flaring," a post which also noted that a Community Warning System Level 1 notification, which does not require emergency response or community action, was issued to keep residents informed about the situation as it unfolds. They reassured the public that the "safety of our workforce, our communities and the environment are our highest priorities," also providing a link to real-time air quality data for those seeking more immediate information.
